Firstly, it is essential to clarify that spirituality is not necessarily related to religion.

Some people see spirituality as their connection with a supreme consciousness, the arts, divine intelligence, the environment, mother earth, the universe or Gaia.

Others are agnostic and see science as their path to spirituality. A classic example is Sam Harris PhD, a neuroscientist and philosopher, who calls himself a Spiritual Atheist. He is also a New York Times bestselling author of many books, including “Spirituality Without Religion”.

Simply put, spirituality is about believing in something bigger than ourselves, which fosters a sense of connectedness and an element of altruism or selflessness in us all.

Regardless of ones belief system (or lack thereof), I believe spirituality is available to everyone who wishes to cultivate this aspect of their lives.

“Spirituality involves the recognition of a feeling or sense or belief that there is something greater than myself, something more to being human than sensory experience, and that the greater whole of which we are part is cosmic or divine in nature.” – Dr. Maya Spencer
